Etching of Montreal, Ernst Neumann, 1947
This is an important early Canadian etching by the listed Canadian artist Ernst Neumann (1907-56). The dry point etching depicts Sherbrooke Street at the McGill University Gates in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. There are pedestrians and horse drawn cabs as well as the iron gates of McGill university visible in the etching. The etching measures approx. 5" by 6 1/2" and the sheet measures 6 1/2" by 9 1/2", and is hand signed in pencil ''Ernst Neumann'' front lower right, and titled "Sherbrooke St. W. and McGill Gates Montreal" lower left, as well as signed ''E Neumann 47'' in the plate. Ernst Neumann was born in Budapest Hungary in 1910 and latter moved to Montreal where he became famous for his high quality etchings and prints, many of which can be found in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada. The etching is in very good condition with remnants of hinges verso which do not affect the image. Included with the etching is the original Walnut frame in very good condition with minor surface wear and a new acid free double mat.
