Bradley & Hubbard Cast Iron Match Box Holder, c 1890
Irregularly shaped foliated rococo base rises in the center to hold a matchbox holder which is made in three parts: two shield shaped outer pieces and an inner block. A cardboard matchbox was meant to slide over the inner block and partially open for access to the matches. The strikers on the box were accessible on the open sides of the metal holder. Cast into the bottom is the Bradley and Hubbard triangle mark and the number 2041. This number does not appear in the ca 1883 B&H salesman's price list in the collection of the Meriden Historical Society, Meriden, Connecticut indicating the ca date of 1890. H.4 1/2" x W.5 1/4" x D.5 1/4"
